They were humble beginnings in 1992 when the Corky Kell Classic hosted four teams –McEachern, Brookwood, Newnan and Southwest DeKalb – for the inaugural two-game event to open the high school football season.

Named for legendary head coach and athletics director Carlton ‘Corky’ Kell, who was the namesake of Kell High School, the ‘Classic’ has grown and evolved exponentially in each of the ensuing 33 incarnations which have included 188 top-tier high school football games.

The event was renamed several years ago to include founder and state championship-winning Brookwood head coach Dave Hunter. Now called the Corky Kell & Dave Hunter Classic, the ‘Classic’ has morphed into the greatest high school football kickoff event on Earth.

For this year’s event, more steps were taken to provide an ease of access for consumers to enjoy the 11-game schedule on television and radio through a partnership with Atlanta News First, which will become an independent station and drop its affiliation with CBS come August 16, during the Classic’s finale at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

“It’s especially fitting that on our first day of this evolution, we are now able to show four tremendous high school games to Atlanta and – through the Peachtree Sports Network – across Georgia,” said Erik Schrader, vice president/general manager of WANF. “Our agenda is local, and we are excited that high school fans across Atlanta and the Peach State will get to see this all on day one.’’

Each game will be televised live on the Peachtree Sports Network (PSN) and streamed live on the Atlanta News First app and the National Federation High School Network (NFHS). Additionally, each of Saturday’s four games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be broadcast live on Atlanta News First (Channel 46 and WANF). Additionally, GameDay Preps will be providing live stats for the whole event and will track each game's individual and team stats with quarterly updates that will be posted on the Corky Kell & Dave Hunter Classic twitter page.

“The last couple of years we have been able to strengthen our relationship with Erik and his platforms at WANF and to add Channel 46 now means everyone with a television set in the metro Atlanta area will be able to watch our games," said I.J. Rosenberg, president of Score Atlanta. “And the Peachtree Sports Network continues to give us a strong presence in south Georgia. Erik and WANF have made a huge statement here, saying they are going to support high school sports in Georgia in a big way.’’

On Saturday, all four games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be televised still on the Peachtree Sports Network (PSN). And additionally, Score Atlanta will broadcast Saturday’s lineup on Channel 46 come Aug. 16, the first day Atlanta News First will become an independent station.

On the airwaves, the late games on both Wednesday and Thursday and the first three of Saturday's games will be covered by 92.9 THE GAME. On Wednesday, Sam Crenshaw will handle play-by-play while Chris Parker handles color commentating for the South Paulding vs. Kell game. On Thursday during the Douglass-ATL vs. West Forsyth game, Eric Slaughter will handle play-by-play with Da Da Lewis handling color commentating. Come Saturday, the first matchup between Dunwoody vs. St. Pius X will be covered by Beau Johnson (play-by-play), Dom Choroski (color) and Garrett Chapman (halftime/postgame host). For Houston County vs. Brookwood, Chris Goforth (play-by-play), Lewis (color) and Chapman (pregame/halftime host) will be on the call, followed by the Walton vs. McEachern matchup which will feature Goforth (play-by-play), Mike Johnson (color) and Caleb Johnson (pregame/halftime/postgame host).

In addition, the Houston County vs. Brookwood game on Saturday will be available on Sportsmic, with Matt Fortson and Grant Sanders calling the game. Friday’s matchup featuring Cass vs. LaGrange at Rome’s Barron Stadium will also be available both on the Cass Sports Network, with Charlie Farmer and Nick Roberts calling the game, in addition to Bartow Sports Zone (WBHF AM 1450) in Cartersville, with Charles Wilson and Jackson Hyde on the call.

The Corky Kell & Dave Hunter Classic website has been completely revamped to allow for a more satisfying user experience. There is a page to see the event’s NFL Alumni or a history page to see the results from every game since 1992. To learn more about coach Hunter, follow the link to his bio.
