With numerous impressive performances after the first week of the high school football season across Class 4A there were not many better than what the Creekside Seminoles were able to accomplish.
At the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic just a week ago at Rome’s Historic Barron Stadium, the Seminoles faced off against the Rome Wolves where they found themselves in a rough position to start the season.
Led by Rome quarterback Aiden McPherson, the Wolves offense was a well-oiled machine early on as they took a quick 21-0 lead in the first quarter as Creekside was in a three-touchdown hole before they could blink.
After the 21 points unanswered from the Wolves, Creekside woke up and answered the bell in a massive way.
Once the second quarter started, it was all Seminoles from there as Creekside scored 21 points unanswered, taking the lead with a minute left in the first half as quarterback Cayden Benson, running backs Cedric Kelly and Gary Walker completely took over the game with a rushing touchdown from each of them in the second quarter to tie up the game.
After a four-yard touchdown pass from McPherson to Georgia Tech-commit JJ Winston, the Rome offense stalled for the rest of the game, the complete opposite from the Seminoles were able to accomplish in the second half.
Creekside was able to score 28 points in the second half, shutting out the Wolves offense as the Seminoles defense began flying to the ball putting a stop to the Wolves scoring.
When it was all said and done, Creekside was able to storm back against Rome as they totaled 516 yards of total offense.
Though Benson accounted for just 92 rush yards, his legs were more than a factor for the Seminoles offense as he was one of three Creekside players to rush for more than 100 yards as they rushed for 424 yards in the 48-28 victory over Rome.
Kelly and Walker were also excellent in the rush attack for the Seminoles as Kelly totaled 129 rush yards and two touchdowns as he averaged almost 13 yards per carry, while Walker rushed for a team-high 183 yards on 20 attempts, finding the endzone one time in the Seminoles comeback last Friday.
After starting its season at the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic, the Seminoles season continues as they will face back-to-back out-of-state opponents in the coming weeks as they will face Seminole (FL) down in Florida before DeSoto (TX) comes to town next week.
