Atwater takes on new duties, Spartans improve to 2-1 in region

Ken Robinson’s football team won its second game of the season on Oct. 10, beating Decatur 35-18. After losing their first four games this year, the Spartans have opened their region campaign going 2-1. Quarterback Colton Chapple came through with his second straight solid performance, going 8-of-14 passing for 190 yards and one touchdown toss. Chapple seems to be benefiting from Robinson’s decision to play Stephen Atwater (yes, he is Denver Bronco legend Steve Atwater’s son) at running back in addition to his defensive back duties. The Spartans rode Chapple’s arm and legs to victory again last Friday, defeating the Blue Devils of Avondale 34-21. Chapple threw two touchdowns on the evening, passing for 157 yards on eight completions. He also scored on an 81-yard run in the third quarter to end any comeback attempt. This Friday, the team travels to Lovett to face the Lions at 7:30 p.m. … After making the 2008 state playoffs, the softball team defeated Heard County (13-0) and East Jackson (2-0) last Friday before losing to Blessed Trinity (6-3) and Lovett (4-3) on Saturday.
