Buford, Woodward girls move forward

The Buford girls soccer team dented the scoreboard early with an Ann Schmidt goal just 27 seconds into the game and the Wolves would never look back against Decatur. Brie Smith and Schmidt would add goals less than one minute apart in the second half to push Buford to a 3-0 victory. … Woodward Academy scored early on a shot from Amanda Myles before limiting Dawson County to just one shot on goal in the War Eagles’ 1-0 victory Thursday. … On the baseball diamond, Hardaway and Northgate split the first two games of their best-of-three Round 1 series with Hardaway winning Game 1 1-0 and Northgate taking the second game 5-4. Cedric Brown went the distance for Hardaway in Game 1, allowing just one hit while striking out seven. The Northgate leadoff hitter recorded the lone hit for the offense before Brown mowed down the rest of the order, allowing just one walk in the process. Brown improved his record to 10-0. In the second game, Northgate trailed early 2-1 but managed to score runs in four straight frames to take a 5-2 lead. Hardaway tried to rally with a Justin Ellison home run drawing the Hawks to within striking distance, but Northgate ultimately forced a decisive Game 3 today. … On Day 1 of the Georgia Olympics, Jefferson’s Mason Hamrick beat out Skylar Toney of Riverside Military of the Class AA pole vault title. Hamrick cleared 14-06 to take the state title after finishing third in 2012. Buford’s David Curry won the AAA pole vault title while Reece Morrow of Brookwood won the AAAAAA crown. Allatoona’s Tray Oates (AAAAA), Pickens’ Tyler Craig (AAAA), Athens Christian’s Levi Cummings (A-Private) and Gordon Lee’s Andrew Towns (A-Public) also earned state titles in the pole vault. … Jaylan Reid of Hillgrove won the AAAAAA shot put while Joey Connors of Harrison took home the AAAAAA discus throw title. In the 1600-meter run, Tyler Woodrome of Mill Creek beat out a pair of Walton competitors in Kenan Farmer and Brian Sullivan. Peachtree Ridge’s Josh Brickell finished fourth in AAAAAA.
