C.C. on C.C.: Yanks ready to break bank

Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin thinks the Yankees are overbidding for free-agent pitcher C.C. Sabathia, and I could not agree with him more! The Yankees reportedly offered Sabathia $140 million over six years, which would be the largest contract ever signed by a pitcher. That’s just ridiculous, especially when you consider that the highest reported offer he’s received is for $100 million. Why would they raise the stakes by $40 million? That’s just bad business. Brian Cashman has obviously learned nothing from the days when he overpaid Kevin Brown and Carl Pavano, just to name two. I’m sure there will be a no-trade clause in the contract because for whatever reason the Yankees feel the need to give all of the power to the free agents they sign. The no-trade clause is one of the biggest reasons the Yankees can’t get better. They can’t get rid of any of the older players whose best years are clearly behind them. (I’m talking to you, Johnny Damon.) I’m not saying six years from now C.C. won’t be worth over $20 million per season. I’m just saying one pitcher is not going to right all of the wrongs on the team, so they should probably spend their money more judiciously.

Mike Singletary has been given one of the best job interviews anyone could ask for and he is not off to a good start. Aside from the fact that he dropped his pants in order to explain to the team how poorly they were playing, his clock management at the end of last week’s Monday night game against the Cardinals was bad enough to make Herm Edwards blush. The worst part is that he tried to pin the loss on the offensive coordinator. For years, people have been clamoring for him to get a head coaching job; well, this is his opportunity to prove he’s capable and right now I’m not convinced he is. There’s still plenty of time left for him to turn it around, but he has a lot of work to do if he is going to convince someone to hand over the keys to their franchise to him.
