Class A-Public baseball recap

Thad Marchman

Charlton County 11-3, Gordon Lee 4-10: The Class A-Public championship series between Charlton County and Gordon Lee kicked off Saturday, resulting in a split. The host Charlton County Indians won the first game 11-4. The Gordon Lee Trojans took the second game 10-3. The Indians out hit the Trojans 11-7 in the first game; however, in the second game of the series, the Trojans out hit the Indians 10-8.

Charlton County senior pitcher and first baseman, Ryan Young, earned the win in Game 1 after pitching six innings. Young will play at Gordon College next year. At the plate, sophomore L.J. Talley drove in a run, singled twice, doubled and tripled.

Charlton County reached the Class A championship series last year, falling to Providence Christian. Charlton County head coach Thad Marchman spoke about what was needed to avoid another second-place finish.

“We just have to find a way to make some adjustments,” said Marchman. “We still have the advantage of playing at home so hopefully we can come back on Monday and put together a good game plan.”

He also noted that he expects this team to “bounce back and be ready to protect (its) home turf.”

Gordon Lee’s Game 2 pitcher, Conard Broom, was exceptional, only allowing two runs. Also, the bats of Jake Rogers, Adam Vandiver, and Bryce Bailey brought in the majority of the runs for the Trojans as Gordon Lee evened the series. In order for Gordon Lee to win Game 3, the Trojans will have to find a way to keep their momentum on offense.

The decisive Game 3 of the GHSA Class A-Public championship series will be played Monday at 3:30 pm in Folkston.
