Cobb Beat: April 16-22

Spring is in the air, and with it, baseball fever is here.
Pope, last year’s Class 5A champion, dropped an 11-4 contest to Lassiter on Friday before falling to Harrison on Saturday by the score of 9-5. With the losses, Pope dropped their record to 11-5. The Greyhounds will look to get back on track when they take on Region opponents Walton, Centennial, and Wheeler this week.
In action this past week, Kennesaw Mountain was able to record a victory on Friday, but could not repeat the results as they went 1-1 over the weekend. In the first game, the Mustangs came out strong, shutting out East Paulding 4-0. On Saturday however, lacking the strong pitching performance from the previous night, the Mustangs were still able to hang with John’s Creek, but fell short in a 9-8 defeat. With their record currently barely above .500, at 10-9, the Mustangs are set to take on Harrison, McEachern and Woodstock this week.
North Cobb had an up and down week as well. After falling to Hillgrove 7-5 on Friday, the Warriors managed to get back on track, defeating McEachern 9-7 on Saturday. Looking to further improve upon a solid 11-6 record, the Warriors will be busy this week, taking on region foes Woodstock, Marietta, and South Cobb.

REGION 7 ACTION …
In Class 4A, Hillgrove added to their win total last week as well. In addition to taking down Hillgrove on Friday, the Hawks looked even more impressive against Cass on Saturday, running away with the win by a score of 11-2. With only three losses, the Hawks are setting pretty at 15-3 with eight games left to play in the regular season. They will receive the opportunity to add to that win total this week, as they take on region opponents Allatoona, Northwest Whitfield and Dalton.
In boys soccer news, Harrison and Hillgrove battled it out on Friday, with the majority of the scoring coming in the first half. It took only 10 seconds for Hillgrove’s Juan Carlos Pacheco to put the Hawks up with a goal from 12-yards out to the lower right corner of the net. It did not take Harrison long to respond as Taylor Deltac knotted the game up at one with a goal from 25-yards out in just the third minute. In addition to Pacheco, Victor Duru also found the net for the Hawks scoring twice to account for the remainder of Hillgrove’s goals. Victor Duru scored the final two goals for Harrison. The game ended in a 3-3 tie, with neither side able to claim the victory.
Pope was also in action over the weekend, suffering a 5-1 defeat against Dacula. With only four games remaining in their season, the Greyhounds will take the field this week as well, taking on both Walton and Roswell.
On the girl’s side, Harrison came out strong against rival Hillgrove on Friday. The Lady Hoyas were impressive from the outset, with Brittney Reed scoring Harrison’s first goal in the seventh minute from about 18 yards out. It did not take long for the Lady Hoyas to strike again. Just a minute later Harrison added another goal on a header by Monica Herrera off of a corner kick from Hannah Deltar. The Lady Hoyas entered half-time leading 3-0, but were not done yet, as they went on to win 6-0, scoring two goals in the final minutes. With the victory, the Lady Hoyas, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, improved their record to 10-1-1 on the season.
On the lacrosse field, Walton continued to rack up wins, adding two more last weekend to improve their record to 9-4. The Raiders traveled all the way to Winston Salem, N.C., to take on Patrick Henry High School on Friday and walked away with a 16-7 victory. The next day, Walton took on and defeated Forsyth Country Day 14-5. With the victory, Walton has now won four in a row.
The Lady Raiders have done almost as well this season, currently holding onto an 8-4 record after adding a victory of their own over the weekend. Walton took on Pace and defeated them handily by a score of 22-1 to break a short two-game losing streak. The Lady Raiders’ next match-up will come later on this week as they take on Lassiter in an away game on April 16.
