COBB BEAT: Walton girls win 120th consecutive match; Marietta struggling

The baseball season is in full swing with several county teams hitting the field this past week.
In Region 5, Class 5A, Kennesaw Mountain faced off against Woodstock on March 19, eventually taking a 6-5 loss after Woodstock’s Zach Hitt knocked in the go-ahead run with a seventh inning double down the left field line. Until then the game was up for grabs, with both teams holding the lead at some point during the game. After Woodstock took a 2-0 lead in the first, the Mustangs rebounded in the bottom of the inning plating three runs with Jamerson Wilson contributing an RBI triple while Ben Johnson added an RBI double. The Wolverines retook the lead with three runs in the second, but it took Kennesaw Mountain only a few more innings to knot the game back up at five before Woodstock retook the lead in the seventh. With the loss, the Mustangs dropped to 3-6 on the season.
Meanwhile, the Harrison Hoyas hosted Lassiter on Saturday. Austin Neely came through for Harrison, going 3-3 at the plate with two doubles and three RBI including the tying run in the fourth and the go-ahead runs in the sixth to give the Hoyas the 5-3 victory and improve their win streak to four. Adam Martin was also impressive at the plate for Harrison, belting a two-run homer in the fourth. Later in the day, however, the Hoyas would see their win streak end at four after being defeated 8-5 by Northside-Columbus.
Marietta, also in action this past week, continued to struggle, recording two more losses. On March 18, the Blue Devils recorded a 10-2 loss against North Cobb. The next day, their luck still had not improved, as were handed their seventh-straight loss by Etowah. The Blue Devils will have an opportunity to turn things around with several games occurring in the coming week.
At Wheeler, the Wildcats struggled a little this week as well going 1-2 to leave their record at 5-4. After falling to Milton 10-9 on March 18, the Wildcats rebounded with a 10-6 victory against Campbell. However, playing for the third-consecutive day on Saturday, Blessed Trinity got the best of the Wildcats by taking the 8-3 victory.
Marietta and Wheeler were not the only teams with losing records this week. Walton struggled on the field as well, going 0-2 to record their fifth-straight loss. The Raiders, who also lost 11-1 to South Forsyth on Monday, were defeated again 8-1 in a makeup game against Pope on Thursday. Walton struggled to get back on the right track on Friday before recording another loss, this one 4-3 against Milton. The Raiders will look to improve upon their 3-7 record this week when they face off against Centennial, Roswell and Alpharetta.

ON THE SOCCER FIELD …
In soccer news, Collin Schalk had a big day on Thursday, scoring twice in the first half to lead Sprayberry to a 2-0 win over Sequoyah in Region 7, Class 4A. Schalk was impressive throughout the game, nearly scoring twice before finally finding the net in the 12th minute on an assist from Cameron Johnson. Schalk’s second and final goal of the afternoon came in the 32nd minute after his shot from about 20 yards out made its way past Sequoyah’s goalkeeper Seth Johnston. With the win, Sprayberry improved to 4-3.
At Hillgrove, Juan Pacheco appears to be off to another stellar season. Last season, as a junior, Pacheco recorded 24 goals and 17 assists. This season, after 10 games, Pacheco has already contributed 20 goals and seven assists. Pachecho already has four three-goal games this season, including a four-goal game against North Cobb on March 1. Pacheco will look to lead the Hawks again on Friday when Hillgrove takes on Paulding County.
On the girls side, there were a few teams in action this past week as well, with Kennesaw Mountain defeating Heritage-Conyers 1-0 on Friday, while Etowah took a 2-0 victory against North Cobb. Sprayberry was also in action, suffering a 5-1 defeat at the hands of South Paulding.
In other sports news, the Walton girls tennis team has been on a roll, winning their 120th consecutive match, most recently defeating Centennial 3-2. No. 3 singles player Casey Mackintosh contributed a win while doubles teams of Claire Marshall and Stephanie Falcon, while Kayla Brady and Marissa Pulido also added victorie
