DEKALB BEAT: Four county teams win state hoops titles, including Columbia’s pair

Ten teams became basketball state champions last week and DeKalb County was a major force as always, with four DeKalb teams taking home silverware.

The Miller Grove Wolverines captured a state title in class 4A for the second consecutive season. Last year, it was a talented senior class that paved the path to glory. But this year, Sharman White’s squad surprised everyone by qualifying for the finals with seven sophomores on the roster. By the time they faced off with Mays for the state title, the youthful team had become a well-oiled machine, having won their last 21 games. They made it 21 in a row with ease, running through the Raiders by a score of 67-45.

At Southwest DeKalb, the Panthers are enjoying a dynasty of sorts, winning their third consecutive state title. SWD won 19 of their final 20 games, including a huge 65-45 win over Northwest Whitefield to win the Class 4A title. The team opened up the game on a 14-0 run and never looked back, becoming the first DeKalb County team ever to win three consecutive state championships.

In Class 3A, it was Columbia dominating the competition, with the boys and girls teams both taking home state titles. For the boys squad, it was a second consecutive title in a 54-46 win over a game LaGrange team. Northwestern commit Jershon Cobb cemented his legacy as one of the top players in CHS’ illustrious history after scoring 20 points in the game.
