Don’t cave, Packers!

We should have known it was too good to be true. In March, Brett Favre was all teary-eyed at a press conference declaring his NFL career was over, but fast forward to July and he’s sending text messages to the Packers GM stating his interest in un-retiring. I think it’s important to keep in mind that Brett is too old to be handling business via text message. This isn’t high school, but whatever.

Brett and his agent want the Packers to grant him an unconditional release. Of course, the Packers are not trying to hear that nonsense. Brett still has three years remaining on his contract and the Packers would have to be fools to let him go play elsewhere without getting some kind of compensation for him. Many Favre fans will not look at the business side of this and realize that the organization is doing the right thing. They’ll just see it as the organization depriving Brett of the one thing he lives for: playing football.

I really hope the Packers don’t cave on this one! If he really wants to play, then make him come into training camp and compete with Aaron Rodgers for the starting position. Yes, I said make him compete for the position. I know he has a long, storied career, but the Packers made a commitment to Aaron Rodgers so the least they can do is let him have a chance to win the starting position. Brett is almost 40 years old and there is no guarantee that he will duplicate last season’s success. He should have to come into training camp and prove he’s the best man for the job just like every other player in the NFL. I don’t know what the going rate is for near 40-year-old quarterbacks who have a knack for throwing interceptions at the most inopportune times, but I’m sure the Packers will try to find out. It’s time they teach Brett that the team is bigger than any one man, even if that one man is a legend.
