Finalists announced for Johnny Paulk Memorial Scholarship recipients

The Georgia High School Golf Coaches Association established the Johnny Paulk Memorial Scholarship in 2021 to honor the late Johnny Paulk. Known as ‘the Mayor of Jekyll’, Paulk was the longtime golf instructor at Jekyll Island and was a teacher to hundreds, a mentor of some and a respected and cherished person within the game of golf.

Consideration was given to the applicant’s academics, conduct on and off the golf course, financial need and the player’s demonstrated leadership.

The recipients of the 2024 award are Zach Emich of Centennial and Paige Greco of Brookwood. Emich was nominated by head coach Sean Shapiro.

“Zach has shown me over the past three years the growth and power that golf and the golf team can give a player,” Shapiro said. “He has gone from just picking up the game to evolving into our team captain his senior year and one of our top players. Over the course of this year, he has continuously rallied the troops and makes himself available to chat either before or after practice. He leads by example and makes sure that he attends all the practices or matches and gatherings to encourage the entire team to lock in and engage throughout the season.”

Greco was nominated by head coach Travis Billings.

“Her dedication, passion and tireless efforts have not only elevated her individual performance but have also brought prestige to our golf program,” Billings said. “Paige has demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, leadership and a relentless pursuit of excellence making them a true asset to our golf program. In addition to her prowess on the golf course, she has maintained an exemplary academic record.”

The recipients will be honored while receiving the scholarship at a ceremony at Sunset Country Club in Moultrie on June 5 at the North-South All Star banquet.
