Force weekly notebook – June 23

The 2008 Southern Division Champion Georgia Force played their final game of the regular season against the current Arena Bowl Champion San Jose Sabercats on Saturday. For the Force, a win wasn’t necessary in this game because they have already clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs. They played hard in the early portion of the game, however, as Chris Greisen threw a touchdown pass to Tiger Jones and Matt Huebner ran one in to tie the game at 14 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Greisen threw three touchdown passes, one to Jones and two to Carl Morris. However, San Jose was able to hang with the Force as they scored 21 points with seven of those points coming off of a Greisen interception; the Sabercats’ Clevlan Thomas returned the pick 35 yards for the score.

The third quarter was the same story for both teams as they were able to score three touchdowns apiece. The Force were up by one after the third, due to a missed PAT by kicker A.J. Haglund, after Greisen threw two more touchdown passes to Morris and another to Charles Pauley. The fourth quarter was not a good one for the Force, however. The Sabercats scored 13 points in the quarter and the Force had a chance to take the lead, but Greisen threw an interception to Thomas for his second pick of the game and that proved to be the difference as San Jose came out on top 68-62.

MORRIS HONORED AGAIN

Receiver Carl Morris has had a great year for the Force and has another award to prove it. For his efforts against the Chicago Rush, Morris was named AFL Ironman of the Week. Morris pulled down eight receptions for 103 yards and a game-high four touchdowns on offense, and also added 1.5 tackles on defense in the win against the Rush. This was the second time in three weeks that Morris received an award, as he was named AFL Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts against Tampa Bay in Week 14. Morris has played in 16 games with the Force and has pulled down 128 receptions and 27 touchdowns. On defense Morris has collared nine tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one blocked field goal.

IT’S POSTSEASON TIME

Now that the regular season is over, the Force will have a week off as a result of earning the No. 2 seed in the National Conference. Their divisional round game will be at the Gwinnett Arena on July 7 and they will play the highest seed to have won their wild-card round matchup. If the Force win their game on July 7 they will play in the Conference Championship that will take place on July 12. The ArenaBowl will take place in New Orleans on July 26.
