FORSYTH/CHEROKEE BEAT: Etowah girls bounced from state hoops playoffs

The Etowah girls basketball team was stopped by Mill Creek 55-41 in the second round of the state tournament. The matchup featured two outstanding centers in seniors Krysta Lewis for Etowah and Moneshia Simmons of Mill Creek. Simmons played an outstanding game, tallying 11 points, 15 rebounds, five steals, four assists and three blocks. The Lady Eagles won 23 games this season and despite losing Lewis this year to graduation, Etowah will return a host of talented players next season, especially guard Stephanie Huffman and 6-foot power forward Kaycee Kash.

BASEBALL’S BACK …
Creekview finished out the weekend strong at the Georgia Dugout Club Tournament, beating Mt. Paran 8-2 and Wheeler 6-2. Christian Van Camp pitched a complete game in the win over Wheeler, striking out four. Region play begins Monday against Gilmer, followed by a Wednesday matchup with West Forsyth. The Grizzlies are the defending Region 7-AAA champs with hopes of finding the same success that helped them to a 22-2 record in region play last season. Gilmer has been shaky in its first four games, winning two and losing two. The two losses came against out-of-classification rivals Union County (10-5) and Fannin County (8-2). However, against West Forsyth, the Grizzlies should get a slightly tougher test. The Wolverines made it to the second round of the state playoffs in 2009, finishing with a 20-10 record. They got their first win of 2010 by beating North Forsyth 4-1 on March 1.
Sequoyah also had a good run at the Georgia Dugout Club Tournament over the weekend, beating Walton 8-4 and South Forsyth 6-5. A five run sixth inning helped the Chiefs build a late lead that they would not relinquish against Walton. Tucker Adams, Kevin Manous, and D.J. Kidd all drove in two runs a piece. The two wins helped offset a 1-3 start as the Chiefs are looking to move above the .500 mark. The non-region schedule doesn’t get any easier as the team hosts defending 2A state champs Lovett on Tuesday and Norcross, which is off to a 3-1 start, on Wednesday.

ON THE COURT …
The Etowah boys tennis team is off to a fast start again with goals nothing short of winning a fifth straight region title. Over the past five seasons, the Eagles finished as high as state runner-up in 2008 to Northview and though this season’s roster might not be as strong as past teams, it is still highly competitive. Garrison LaDuca, who also played #1 singles for the team last year is back, and could accept a spot to play at Samford University. The spot in the lineup that might be most difficult for opponents is Vincent Delise at #2 Singles. Delise went 17-0 last season at #2 and is 4-0 in 2010. After already defeating one of their toughest region rivals in Harrison 4-1, the Eagles next big match comes against Marist. Etowah beat Marist 5-0 in 2009.
The Lambert girls tennis team defeated Gainesville 5-0 after losing to their toughest region rival West Forsyth 2-3. The team is 5-1 thus far and should compete with West Forsyth for the region title. They will get another regular season shot at the Lady Wolverines when they host them on March 24th.

SOCCER SEASON GAINING STEAM …
The West Forsyth girls soccer team continued to show it’s a force in the county by beating Forsyth Central, 3-1. Goalkeeper Hannah Garcia turned in another dominant performance giving up the lone goal to Central’s Haley Paige in the 58th minute after West had already jumped out to a three goal lead. Garcia had an outstanding second half as the Lady Bulldogs really turned up the heat and started to get more shots on goal. However, for most of the game, it was West keeping the pressure on Central’s goalkeeper, Hanan Zaki. Aly Laughlin scored one goal and Allie Sweeney scored two goals for the Lady Wolverines.
On the same night, the West and Central boys teams also took to field with West ultimately getting the 3-1 decision. Though the score was similar to the girls game, the action played out much differently. Striker Ryan Griswold and Central was the early aggressor in the match getting breakaways and shots. However, miscues plagued the team and Wolverines goalkeeper Zach Liles was able to keep order until his team’s offense got going in the second half. Ben Lucas, Kyle Billington, and Ranier Lopez all scored for West in the second half.
