FRIDAY PREP BLOG: Region rivalries heating up

It’s now the halfway point of the football season, so from here on out every game is critical for every team with region play in full swing.

Two teams that will likely make the playoffs yet again are Marist and Tucker, and they will do battle against each other tonight. Tucker is the No. 1 team in Class 4A and the defending state champions, as they beat Marist in the finals in December. Marist is No. 10 in Class 4A, and even though they lost to the Tigers in the finals, they did get the upper hand last year in their regular-season battle as they shut out Tucker 38-0.

Another game to watch for in 4A is Bainbridge taking on Westside-Macon. Both teams come into the contest with a 4-0 record and have a 2-0 record in region play. There will be plenty of talent on the field, as two players from Westside (Ronald Carswell and DeAnthony Green) have committed to big Division I-A schools. This game should determine the champion of Region 1.

Grayson looks to keep the good times rolling against Parkview, and the winner of this game will be the top dog in Region 8-AAAAA. Parkview lost its opener to Collins Hill, 10-7, but has won its last three games and has outscored opponents 92-7. Grayson is ranked No. 2 in Class 5A and has a 4-0 record.

Because of the flooding that went on at the beginning of the week, several games have been rescheduled. McEachern, which is ranked No. 8 in 5A will play South Cobb on Saturday at 1 p.m. instead of Friday at 7:30 p.m. Pope will travel to Kell, and the game will be played Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The 4-0 Walton Raiders, who were supposed to have their homecoming on Friday night against Alpharetta, have pushed the game back to Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
