Friday Roundup: Region titles on the line tonight, Oudin heads to Italy

The Region 7-AAAAA title will once again be on the line tonight when the Bulldogs of North Gwinnett host the Peachtree Ridge Lions. This is the third straight year the region championship has been on the line in this game between these two teams. The Lions have won both, but tonight the Bulldogs hope that they can snap a string of four straight losses in the de-facto region championship game. Bulldog QB CJ Uzomah missed last week’s 34-0 victory over Duluth with an injury and is reportedly a game-time decision. The Bulldogs are trying to achieve the program’s first 10-0 regular season in its 52-year history. The Lions have allowed just 11 points per game this season while North Gwinnett’s offense averages 32 ppg. Meanwhile, two undefeated teams will be going after the Region 6-AAAAA title when Lassiter hosts Roswell. Lassiter is also seeking its first 10-0 season in school history while Roswell is looking for its third region title this decade. The game can be seen on gpb.org/football. And in Class AAAA, Lithonia and Stone Mountain must forfeit a combined eight wins, which knocks Stone Mountain out of the No.4 spot in Region 6-AAAA. Chamblee and Miller Grove will play tonight for the final playoff spot.

Cobb County-native Melanie Oudin will be representing America this weekend in the finals of the Fed Cup as the US faces host Italy. The Williams sisters are skipping the event, leaving Oudin as the likely No.1 singles player. Oudin burst onto the scene with a Wimbledon run which she followed up with a huge run at the US Open. Oudin has some experience with the Fed Cup as she won a big singles match in the opening round against Argentina.

Dez Bryant has exhausted his final appeal to rejoin the Oklahoma State Cowboys and will now enter the NFL Draft. Bryant was ruled ineligible by the NCAA after repeatedly lying to officials about an afternoon with Deion Sanders. Bryant scored two touchdowns in the Cowboys victory over the Georgia Bulldogs and is projected by most scouts to be the first wide receiver called in the 2010 NFL Draft.
