Friday Roundup: Phillies take game one of NLCS, Ga. HS football is HOT!

The Los Angeles Dodgers seemingly had everything going for them entering the NLCS. LA would be at home in game one, a rested bullpen coming off of a sweep and the boppers all healthy and ready to play. Then game one started. The Dodgers pitchers gave up seven walks and uncorked three wild pitches, not to mention two three-run home runs in an 8-6 loss to Philadelphia. Neither pitcher could make it past the sixth inning as Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw blew up in the fifth while Phillies lefty Cole Hamels was knocked out after 5.1 innings. Carlos Ruiz and Raul Ibanez both homered for Philly while Manny Ramirez and James Loney went deep for LA. After struggling for most of the season, Brad Lidge picked up the save, his third straight in this postseason.

The No.8 Bearcatsof Cincinnati were forced to go with a back-up quarterback in last night’s game against South Florida, but it didn’t matter as UC beat USF 34-17. It was the 12th straight regular season win for Cincinnati and it came without QB starter Tony Pike, who hurt himself in the first series of the second half. Zach Collaros passed for 72 yards but ran ten times for 132 yards, including a 4-yard TD and a 75-yard score to ice the game. Pike sprained his left wrist and will see a doctor today; Pike missed time last season with a broken arm.

For those Georgia High School football fans that love to beat their chests that the state is moving up in the national perception, ESPN agrees with you. Tonight’s Stephenson/ML King game is being broadcast on ESPNU. The game features ML King’s Mack Brown, one of the nation’s top rated running backs who has committed to the Florida Gators and who earlier this week predicted an ML King victory.

Finally, it should be a huge game at Peachtree Ridge tonight as the No.9 Lions face an undefeated Collins Hillteam. Both the Eagles and the Lions are unbeaten in region 7-AAAAA play and the winner moves closer to clinching a home date in the first round of the state playoffs. Peachtree Ridge has won the last two seasons 21-0. The game can be seen on the Internet at gpb.org/football.
