GHSA Volleyball finals set after semifinal action Saturday

The state championship matches are set for the GHSA State Volleyball Championships after semifinal action concluded Saturday.

In the state’s highest class, Walton beat Cherokee 3-0 to advance to the finals against Alpharetta, which defeated North Forsyth in five sets in the semis. Walton has won 15 state championships and missed out last season when Alpharetta won the program’s first-ever championship.

Buford defeated Pope in five sets in the 6A semifinals and will look to defend last year’s championship against Sequoyah, which beat Lassiter in five sets to advance. Sequoyah has one state title while Buford wants its fourth.

Defending-champion McIntosh lost to St. Pius in the quarterfinals, opening the class to a new champion. In the semis, Pius beat Blessed Trinity 3-1 and Greenbrier defeated Woodward Academy 3-1 to advance. In Class 4A, Flowery Branch beat Northwest Whitfield and will face defending champion Marist in the final after the Eagles defeated Fayette County 3-0 in the semis. In Class 3A, Greater Atlanta Christian beat Cherokee Bluff 3-1 to advance to the title match against Sandy Creek. The Patriots earned the title berth after beating Oconee County 3-0 in the semis.

Defending-champion Pace Academy will take on Gordon Lee in the finals of Class 2A/A Public after Pace beat Union County 3-0 and Gordon Lee beat Lovett 3-0 in the semifinals. In Class A Private, Mount Paran advanced to the title match after beating ELCA 3-1 and will face Athens Academy, which beat defending-champion Holy Innocents’ in the semifinals.
