On Tuesday, Georgia State University president Mark Becker named Cheryl Levick as the university’s next athletics director. She will assume her duties on March 30.
“Cheryl Levick is widely considered one of the best collegiate athletics administrators in the country,” said Becker, who made hiring an athletics director a top priority when he took office in January. “Her dedication to excellence both on and off the field made her the obvious choice to lead the charge for exciting change in athletics here at Georgia State University.”
Levick currently serves as chief of staff/executive senior athletic director at the University of Maryland. During her time there, Levick has overseen daily management of 27 varsity teams, a 180-member staff
and an annual budget of $51 million. She also was instrumental in a fundraising campaign to sell multi-year leases on the university’s athletic arena suites.
“I am proud and excited to be the new athletics director at Georgia State and to be a part of President Becker’s new administrative team,” Levick said. “This is an exciting time for the university with its growth, exciting goals and vision toward new heights. With our strong coaching staff and the addition of football, the athletic department will be an integral part of the overall growth and the university’s success.”
Prior to the University of Maryland, Levick was athletics director at Saint Louis University, where she led its transition from Conference USA into the Atlantic 10 and spearheaded the fund-raising effort for a new
sports arena and adjacent practice facilities.
Levick also served as the first female athletics director at Santa Clara (Calif.) University. There, she oversaw a major renovation of the school’s basketball arena, broke ground on a baseball stadium and secured more than $40 million from the university’s capital campaign.
From May 1988 to June 2000, Levick was the senior associate athletics director at Stanford University. She managed 33 men’s and women’s varsity sports programs, served as facility project fundraiser for athletics, and provided administrative oversight of all Pac-10 and NCAA championships hosted by Stanford.
A recipient of numerous awards for her work in athletics, she was named the 2001 Division I Athletic Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) and in 1998 and 1999 as one of the nation’s Top 25 Female Sports Executives by Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal.
Levick, a native of St. Louis, is a 1974 graduate of the University of Missouri, and earned a master’s degree in athletic administration from Indiana University in 1977. She has two daughters, Heather and Melissa, and a son-in-law, Michael Klass.
