Hamels was difference for Philly, BCS madness and thoughts on Falcons, Hawks and Dawgs

The Philadelphia Phillies are World Series champions! Who says you need more than one really good pitcher to win it all? Cole Hamels was named MVP for his efforts in shutting down Tampa Bay’s lineup and also for his efforts to try to get them to call Game 5 because of rain. Maybe I’m the only person who noticed, but it sure looked to me like he was stalling as the rain began to worsen in the top of the sixth inning when the Phillies still had a one-run lead. Now in fairness to Hamels, B.J. Upton was on first base and he had already stolen several bases during the series, but when he wasn’t throwing over to first, Hamels was stalling. Prior to the threat of the game being called, he had been working at a normal pace. Luckily, the Rays tied the game before the commissioner decided to call it a night. Bud Selig said he would not have let the World Series end on a called game. Either way, the Phillies are champions.

Alabama sits atop the BCS rankings after Texas Tech upset Texas on Saturday night. That No. 1 spot is not a good place to be this season. Alabama will probably lose this week just to shake things up. There are so many really good teams you just wish there was some sort of non-mathematical format to decide which two teams should battle it out for the title. Too bad it’s only 2008 and we don’t have anything that sophisticated.

The Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Falcons are on the verge of making professional sports in Atlanta relevant again. The Hawks came from 23 points down to beat Philadelphia on Saturday night and one day later, that Falcons defense was nasty against the Raiders. Atlantans finally have something to cheer about.

Oh, and poor Georgia Bulldogs. That’s really all I can say about that.
