Historic draw highlights Lassiter meet

Tift County High School

Lassiter hosted the House of Troy Gymnastics Invitational at the North Metro Gymnastics facility in Woodstock over the weekend and history was made. Two-time defending state champion Tift County tied with host Lassiter, marking the first time in GHSA history that two teams have tied for first place at an invitational meet.

Tift County and Lassiter each scored 109.175 to finish ahead of Lambert (108-875), Buford (107.4) and Cartersville (103.70). Milton finished in sixth place out of 16 teams. Alpharetta, Buford, Cambridge, Kell, Northview, Pike County, Pope, Roswell, South Forsyth, Walton and Wheeler all took part in the event.

Tift County had to count three falls on the beam, likely costing the Blue Devils a chance at winning the title outright.

Beth Roberts was a machine for Tift County, scoring a 9.65 on vault and a 9.9 on floor, easily taking both events. Roberts would finish second on bars en route to a second-place finish in the all-around. Tift County would also see Libby Barbour finish third in the all-around after finishing second on floor. Tatum Lamb also competed in the all-around for Tift County while Jayde Cowart (vault), Bryanna McInvale (bars, floor) and Kate Anderson (beam) competed on individual events.

Lambert’s Katie Stuart won the all-around title after edging Roberts on bars and easily capturing beam. Stuart finished second on vault and third on floor.

Host Lassiter was able to rack up points thanks to Katie Steele and Caroline Hohl. Steele finished third in vault and beam while Hohl placed second on beam.

It was a successful week for Tift County as the Blue Devils also defeated Lowndes, Bainbridge, Colquitt County and Thomas County Central in a meet in Thomasville. Roberts won the all-around competition while Lamb scored a fourth-place finish in the all-around. Roberts won vault (9.8), bars (9.6) and floor (9.3) en route to the all-around title. Eight total Blue Devils competed in the meet.
