History made in Chattahoochee win

Terri Dinardo

A record was set last week when Chattahoochee’s Claudia Coco broke the Georgia individual all-time career digs record on Thursday against McIntosh. Lindsey Weider of Dacula set the original record at 1,930 (2003-2006), but Coco, a University of Tennessee commit, needed just eight games into her senior season to break it. Coco had 702 digs last season and continues her blazing pace. The Cougars edged McIntosh and held off Marist in straight sets.

In Class AA, Wesleyan topped Lovett (25-21, 25-22) in straight sets of its highly competitive top 10 playdate. The Wolves finished 1-3, but fell to Savannah Christian (25-16, 22-25, 15-13), Westminster (25-21, 25-14) and Landmark Christian (25-20, 27-25). Jefferson emerged as the newest member in the Class AA top 10 after toppling former No. 10 Rabun County in straight sets. The Dragons won five of six matches Saturday, including wins over East Jackson, Athens Christian, Winder Barrow, Rabun County, and Chestatee. Jefferson improves to 10-3 on the season. Grace Williamson had 26 aces and 22 kills for the Dragons Saturday.

In Class AAAAAA, North Cobb moves to 9-3 on the season and went 4-0 this weekend in its annual play date. The Warriors topped Sandy Creek (26-24, 25-10), Starr’s Mill (25-13, 25-23), North Gwinnett (24-26, 25-16, 15-11) and Norcross (25-19, 27-25).

Whitewater fell in the rankings, and losses to Sequoyah, Northside-Columbus, Newnan and Columbus bumped the Wildcats outside of the top 5. Allatoona lost to Riverwood over the weekend, and as a result the Raiders replace Allatoona at No. 10.

Sandy Creek had a difficult slate of games last weekend, and fell victim to it. Landmark Christian, North Cobb, Blessed Trinity, Roswell and Etowah all concluded the weekend sweep of the Patriots.

Blessed Trinity remains at top of Class AAA after sweeps of Starr’s Mill, North Gwinnett, Norcross and Sandy Creek over the weekend. The Titans remain perfect on the season at 15-0.

Savannah Christian upset top ranked Landmark Christian (18-25, 14-25, 5-15) and takes over No. 1 in the highly competitive Class A with Holy Innocents’ and Walker close behind.
