Lions roll into football playoffs with two straight blowout wins

The football team closed out its regular season with two Region 6-AA victories. The first came against Avondale (1-9) in a 56-0 victory on Oct. 31 while the second was over Decatur (3-7) this past Friday by a score of 49-27. In the win over Decatur, Lovett rolled up 502 yards of total offense, including 389 on the ground. Taylor Mack and Zach Wolfe each ran for two touchdowns for Lovett. With the wins, Lovett clinched a playoff berth as the No. 2 seed in the region. The Lions will entertain Region 5-AA Macon County (5-5) on Friday at Kilpatrick Stadium. The No. 3-seeded Bulldogs were ironically Lovett’s second-round opponents in the 2007 state playoffs, a game Lovett won 22-0. … The volleyball squad lost in the state finals last Saturday to No. 1 Westminster 3-1. Lovett finished the season with a 34-11 record. Mary Buczek’s team went 6-2 during the postseason, with both losses coming to the rival Wildcats. … The girls cross country squad won the Region 6-AA meet and the state title while the boys finished second in the region. The win was the girls’ fourth straight state title in a row. Elizabeth Rucker was Lovett’s top finisher (fifth overall) with a time of 20:11.93.
