McIntosh soccer, Lowndes baseball find weekend success

Eighteen Greenbrier boys soccer players were suspended last week for drinking on a school trip. Two of them were also accused of smoking synthetic marijuana on the trip to Jekyll Island March 14-16 for the Jekyll Island Tournament of Champions. The short-handed Class AAAAA No. 2 Wolfpack lost to No. 1 McIntosh 4-0 Saturday. … Class AAAA No. 6 Chestatee edged No. 2 Johnson-Gainesville 5-4 in penalty kicks after a 0-0 regulation tie Saturday. Andres Olivas got the shut out in goal for the War Eagles. … The No. 8 Chestatee girls also won, beating Johnson 2-1. … Class AAAA No. 7 Alexander beat Columbus 3-1 as Greg Stulz, Dom Ruggiano and Case Munro each scored for the Cougars. … Lowndes swept Valdosta in soccer over the weekend. The Vikings boys team beat their rivals 3-1 while the girls beat Valdosta 2-0. Both Lowndes squads are now 3-0 in Region 1 play.

On the diamond, Class AAAAA No. 3 Greenbrier waxed local rival Evans 7-0 Friday behind winning pitcher Adam Sasser’s five shut-out innings. … Like in soccer, Lowndes swept Valdosta Friday night 10-2, 2-0 as the Vikings improved to 6-0 in region play. Cory Pope got the win in Game 1 with a complete game performance giving up just two earned runs. Dalton Register and Logan Hutchinson then combined on a three-hit shutout in Game 2. Josh Day was 2-for-2 with a homer and four RBIs in Game 2. … Harris County swept Lee County Friday 8-7 and 11-3. Neil Jimmerson had three hits and five RBIs in the doubleheader. … Northside-Warner Robins also had a sweep, blanking Thomas County Central 4-0 and winning Game 2 6-1. Pitcher Chase Slocumb tossed a complete game two-hitter in Game 1 while Rob Shayne and Tyler Neville combined on a no-hitter in Game 2. The lone run was unearned. … Hardaway swept Bainbridge 5-0 and 4-0 Friday as Cedric Brown won Game 1 with a complete game shutout and Tre’von Day struck out 12 in a Game 2 two-hitter.
