METRO PREVIEW: A look at tonight’s Atlanta-area action

The biggest challenge to date for the Buford Wolves is finally here as the No. 1 team in Class AA will host the No. 3 GAC Spartans for the Region 6-AA subregion title. The Wolves have won eleven straight in the series, including a 38-7 decision one year ago. Both teams are undefeated though only the winner is assured of a spot in the state playoffs. … The Battle of Five Forks-Trickum goes down tonight at the Brookwood Community Stadium. Other than bragging rights, second place in Region 8-5A is at stake and Brookwood could keep its region title hopes alive with a win. Nick Tompkins rushed for nearly 200 yards one week ago. … Region 2-5A will have two big games on the docket as ML King travels to Newnan and East Coweta visits Stephenson (GPB TV Game of the Week). King and Stephenson square off in two weeks. … Grady, ranked No. 5 in Class AAA, will host No. 2 St. Pius and try to just score against the Golden Lions. Geno Smith and St. Pius have posted four shutouts this season. … Centennial hosts North Forsyth with an eye on Alpharetta next week. With some help the Knights could face the Raiders for the Region 6-5A title. … Lassiter will face Marietta, co-leaders of Region 5-5A. The Blue Devils are unbeaten in region play and winless outside of region play. The Trojans sit 2-1, 6-1 overall. … North Gwinnett’s defense has been impressive this season but Mill Creek offers another challenge as John Russ leads the Hawks offense that has averaged 33 points per game, second-most in the region behind the Bulldogs. … Corey Jarvis’ Duluth Wildcats travel to Suwanee to face Peachtree Ridge in a three-way tie for third place in Region 7-5A with Collins Hill and Duluth.
