North Gwinnett’s Barrett Carter is coming off a breakout sophomore season that propelled him to top tier of the Class of 2021, and as a result, the junior outside linebacker is the only non-senior represented in the Corky Kell Top 10 Players List. Carter’s impressive sophomore highlights attracted an inpouring of offers and he has climbed all the way to the No. 6 outside linebacker in the country according to 247sports for his class.

Carter already has 23 offers heading into the 2019 season and his busy offseason included a spate of visits in the month of June to campuses ranging from Alabama, Auburn and Georgia Tech. Carter stands 6-foot-1, 205 pounds and has 4.59 speed that merges a blend of speed and power necessary for defending successfully against the wide variety of offenses the Bulldogs will be facing this season. In 2018, he posted 51 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three sacks and an interception.

No story shows how quickly Carter’s abilities stand out better than the one described earlier this year by 247sports. Notre Dame defensive line coach Mike Elston had come down to a North Gwinnett practice to get a closer look at 6-foot-6 senior defensive end Jared Ivey, a three-star with 19 offers, including the Fighting Irish. During the visit, however, Elston took notice of Carter, and an offer was swiftly made to the rising junior.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

North Gwinnett’s matchup with Colquitt County is going to have plenty of storylines to watch for. In their quarterfinals meeting last year, Ty Leggett gashed the North Gwinnett defense for four rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown. Leggett has since graduated, but Daijun Edwards is going to be back at the running back position and Jaycee Harden is back at quarterback for the Packers. This will be a major test for North Gwinnett’s defense and a tremendous opportunity to watch Carter go up against a premier opponent.
