PANTHER BEAT: Steele names four players to preseason team

Georgia State’s football team has yet to play a game but the preseason magazine put out by Phil Steele has named four Panthers to their 2010 FCS All-Independent Team. On the offensive side, center Ben Jacoby, a transfer from Ball State, and guard Joseph Gilbert, a transfer from Georgia Tech, were named.

Jacoby, a junior from Buford, Ga., was a member of the Cardinals’ 2008 squad that went 12-2 and participated in the GMAC Bowl. Gilbert, a junior from Cartersville, Ga., started 26 of Tech’s last 27 games. On defense, linebacker Louie Muasau (Phoenix College, Sierra Vista, Arizona) and defensive back Brent McClendon (Mays High School) took the honors. This preseason “All-Independent” team also includes players from Old Dominion, Savannah State, North Carolina Central and Lamar, all of whom are on Georgia State’s 2010 schedule. The Panthers continue weight training this summer in preparation of fall practice as they look forward to their Sept. 2 season opener against Shorter College in the Georgia Dome.

BOYS OF SUMMER …

The top summer baseball league here in Atlanta for college players is the Sunbelt League, which includes among its five directors, former Panther pitcher Bobby Bennett. At the halfway point through their season, their all-star game features five current Georgia State players as well as Ryan Moore, who just finished his senior season. Pitchers Will Campbell, Jeremy Gazerro, Aidan Francis, Nick Squeglia and catcher Shane Hammond the other Panthers included.

“I am so exciting and happy for our players who made the all-star game in the Sunbelt League,” commented head coach Greg Frady. “It is a phenomenal thing to see that many players get to play in one all-star game. They have worked very hard and absolutely deserve it. With that many players in the game, it is just a great representation for our university.”

Zach Chastain, Ben Marshall and Theo Asher are also playing in the league. … All-CAA First Team member Mark Micowski continues to excel in the Cape Cod League with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. … Four members of the team, Charley Olson, Ryan Fleming, Rob Lind and Brandon Williams are playing in the Northwoods League.
