Playoff hopefuls prepare for season

Sonny Kennedy

There will be 140 scrimmages played tonight across the state. It will be an important night of football, as many of the schools have just one week before their season openers.

Score Atlanta will be at the Walton vs. South Cobb scrimmage tonight, as the Raiders will take the field for the first time without current Alabama running back Tyren Jones and current UGA OL Brandon Kublanow. Sophomore Karekin Brooks and Breyon Thomas will share carries behind a brand-new offensive line that features a whole new cast of starters.

South Cobb will hit the turf with a new head coach in former Burke County defensive coordinator Michael Youngblood. Ed Koester resigned in January after posting a 7-3 record.

Class AAAAAA Berkmar has the daunting task of playing in Region 8 and will scrimmage with defending AAA state champion Buford in hopes of preparing them for the tough road ahead. The Patriots finished 2-8 last year. The Wolves open up with Elbert County before facing off with Gainesville Sept. 6.

Allatoona comes off a great 11-2 season, but replaces almost the entire starting lineup this season. A scrimmage with North Cobb is going to provide the Bucs with a great opportunity to find weaknesses before aiming for another playoff berth this season.

Cambridge is still in its infancy as a program, but the Bears have made tremendous strides heading into their second season. Head coach Craig Bennett went 1-9 last season, but an excited student body and a year of experience will make Cambridge’s scrimmage with Blessed Trinity intriguing.

One of the premier scrimmages tonight is Grayson against defending Class AAAAA state champion Gainesville. The Rams lost 21 starters from last year, and head coach Mickey Conn says he has a group of guys that have waited their turn and will be ready to compete this season. Grayson opens up with Colquitt County in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic and testing its new defense against the arguably the state’s best offense last season (Gainesville) will be a great measuring stick.

Milton made the postseason last year in head coach Howie DeCristofaro’s second season and he is taking his team on a road trip to Camden County to prepare them for for Region 5. Eagles running back Treyvon Paulk is committed to Tennessee. Camden County enters a new era with offensive coordinator Welton Coffey stepping in for the departed Jeff Herron. Coffey will use the scrimmage to prepare his team to take on North Gwinnett in the Corky Kell next week.
