PREP BASEBALL PLAYOFFS: Lassiter sweeps Redan

After blowing a 4-0 lead, Lassiter broke a 4-4 tie with a seven-run sixth inning in Game 2 Monday. It was an inning to forget for Redan. The Trojans scored four runs on wild pitches and another on a hit-by-pitch. Only two of the seven runs in the inning came from run-scoring hits by the Trojans. Redan trailed 4-0 early, but scored two runs in the fourth and fifth to tie up the ball game. Junior Reed Anthes led the Lassiter offense in the second game, driving in three runs. After the wheels came off in the sixth, a resilient Raider squad had nothing left in the tank.

In Game 1, Lassiter took the early lead with a three-run third inning, behind an Anthes RBI single and a two-run hit from Cody Johnson. Redan would tie the game in the fifth to make it 3-3, but Lassiter responded in the bottom half of the inning with a four-run inning, getting RBIs from Anthes, Andrew Gordon (two) and Brett Nelson. Brandon Stephens was solid on the mound, tossing a complete game, striking out six, and keeping a speedy Raiders offense at bay, for the most part.

With the sweep, Lassiter remains the only unbeaten team in the 5A playoffs at 8-0. Lassiter’s offense continues to light up the scoreboard and is averaging 11 runs per game in the playoffs. The Trojans will aim for their third state title on Friday; they will meet the winner of Harrison/North Gwinnett, who will play a deciding Game 3 on Tuesday.
