PREPS: Final day of hoops playoffs crowns six champions

On the final day of 2011 GHSA basketball, a total of six state titles were handed out. Unlike Friday, there were no upsets and most of the games were one-sided.

In the Class AAA boys state title game, Columbia pulled away from Butler in the fourth quarter to win their second consecutive championship by a score of 56-37. Tahj Shamsid-Dean led the way for Columbia, scoring 15 points in the first half and finishing with 20. Butler’s Chris Washington had 14 points but fouled out midway through the fourth quarter.

Class AAA Girls

Washington County 62, Dalton 50: When you’re hot, you’re hot, and that was the case for Sierra McNure, as she scored a game-high 19 points to lead Washington County (33-0) over Dalton for the state title. Dalton ends their season with a 33-1 record, and Quanisha McCurty led the Catamounts with 14 rebounds and six blocks.

Class AA boys

GAC 76, Buford 36: GAC won their second state championship in a row, and this one came easy. Senior Malcolm Brogdon led the Spartans with 20, while A.J. Davis and Trent Boyd added 14. It was the third time these two rivals had played, with the Spartans taking all three games.

Class AA girls

Buford 57, GAC 38: The Lady Wolves won their third straight state title in dominating fashion. It was the fourth meeting between the two rivals, with Buford winning three. Mackenzie Darrah had 18 points while Kaela Davis had 15 to lead the Lady Wolves.

Class A boys

Wilkinson County 75, Terrell County 68: Senior guard Vashone Jones led Wilkinson County with 19 fourth quarter points to help push the Warriors past stubborn Terrell County. Jones finished with a game-high 27. The Warriors won their fifth state title, fourth in Class A.

Class A girls

Wesleyan 65, Pace Academy 43: Leading just 23-20 at the half, the Lady Wolves responded in the second to win their fourth consecutive state title. Wesleyan has won eight state titles since 2002. Senior guard Grace Leah Baughn scored 25 points to lead the Lady Wolves. Morgan Bailey had 20 for Pace.
