PREPS: GADA names award winners at yearly conference

The Georgia Athletic Director’s Association recently convened for their yearly conference. The meetings, seminars and camaraderie concluded with the presentation of GADA’s annual awards.

The State Athletic Director of the Year Award went to Ricky Turner of Blessed Trinity. Turner had been pulling double duty as head football coach and AD until last fall. In 2010, His leadership helped Blessed Trinity finish second overall in the competition for the GADA Director’s Cup.

Peggy Johnson of the Savannah-Chatham County School District received the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Award of Merit. This laurel is given to “an NIAAA member who demonstrates outstanding leadership and meritorious service and achievement in the vocation of interscholastic administration.”

The Distinguished Service Award went to Joe Sanfalippo from White County. Sanfalippo has been a fixture at high school athletic contests in northwest Georgia for decades.

Johnny Seabrooks, AD of the Daugherty County School System, has had the privilege of making multiple trips to the awards dais lately. Last summer, he was inducted into the Track and Cross Country Coaches of Georgia Hall of Fame. At the GADA convention, he was presented the Citation Award.

It was certainly a busy weekend for the GADA president, Bob Stinchcomb. Stinchcomb, who serves as the AD at Darlington also received a special kudo. He was handed the Frank Kovaleski Professional Development Award. Frank Kovaleski was a national leader among ADs. He is credited for developing and cultivating continuing education programs for ADs across the country.

GADA also recognized a State Athletic Director of the Year in each classification. Ashley Barnwell of Savannah Christian won the award in Class A. In 2A, the award went to Joel Rodgers of Heard County. Carrollton County’s David Brooks brought home the Class 3A hardware. Ken LeCain of Statesboro won in Class 4A, and Chuck Wilson of Woodstock took home the honor in the state’s largest classification.

Other highlights from the convention included a presentation on concussions, a hot button issue on every level of athletics. University of Georgia athletic director, David McGarity also addressed the ADs.
