Softball Playoff Notebook: Buford looks to continue domination

The second round of the playoffs begins tonight for Class AA-AAAAAA. Class A, meanwhile, begins its initial playoff action tonight. One of the favorites is Buford in Class AAA, one of the top teams in the state regardless of classification.

 

Tony Wolfe’s Wolves have won a state championship each year since 2007 (AA from 2007-2011 and AAA in 2012). Buford scored 317 runs this year for an average of 9.91 runs per game while accumulating a 31-1 regular season record and a 6-0 record thus far in the preseason. The Buford pitching staff has held opponents to a .181 batting average while maintaining a 1.07 ERA.

 

Class AAAAAA No. 7 Archer plays an interesting first-round series with No. 1 Lassiter tonight. The Tigers are led by Florida-commitment Jacqui Switzer, who is hitting .370 with six doubles and five homers. Junior pitcher Kory Best is 14-5 with a 1.87 ERA this season for Archer.

 

Danielle Downs of Hiram led metro Atlanta players with a .605 batting average and 20 doubles this season. The Hornets season, however, ended in the Region 5-AAAAA tournament.

 

In stats acquired from MaxPreps.com, Grayson junior catcher Stephanie Snyder is hitting .566 with seven homers, near top of the leaderboard in both areas. Snyder’s third-seeded Rams are playing at top seeded North Gwinnett tonight. … Sophomore Kierston Moore of Sprayberry hit.544 with six homers, but her Yellow Jackets did not make the state playoffs. … Harrison senior pitcher Bridgette Rainey is carrying a 10-5 record with a 1.57 ERA and 91 strikeouts on the mound. she is also a star at the plate hitting, .489. Rainey’s Hoyas are at East Coweta tonight. … Class A-Private No. 14 Mount Pisgah will be led by Courtney Condon, a senior who is hitting .419 with six homers. Mount Pisgah plays at Prince Avenue Christian tonight.
