THE OWL OUTLOOK: Men’s cross country wins A-Sun; soccer team in semis

The men’s and women’s cross country teams finished strong seasons at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships. The Atlantic Sun men’s Coach of the year, Stan Sims, led the Owls team to their second straight Atlantic Sun title. Nabil Hamid, Jaakko Nieminen and Piotr Witczak all finished in the top ten and within 30 seconds of each other to claim spots on the All-Atlantic Sun Conference First Team. On the women’s side, Mackenzie Howe took home the individual title after two previous attempts. Howe finished second the first two times, but narrowly defeated Shelby Kittrell of North Florida with a time of 17:22 this time around.

“It is my senior year and I just knew how badly I wanted the title,” said Howe. “That was the biggest motivator overall for me.”

The Lady Owls soccer team needed two overtime periods and a shootout to advance past East Tennessee State in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. Keeper Staci Pugh led a tough defensive effort and had two huge saves, while Kristin Kranack scored the game-winning goal to send Kennesaw State into the semis against No. 1 seed Jacksonville on Thursday.

“It was a good game tonight. We practiced penalty kicks during this week so we were prepared for the situation,” said Head Coach Rob King. “Staci is a top-notch keeper so when you save a couple, and bang in all your PK’s, you win.”

The Lady Owls volleyball team rolled through Campbell to keep a hold on second place in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Grace Hoyt led the team with a career-high 17 kills and a .445 hitting percentage as the Owls won 3-1, which is their sixth consecutive match victory. KSU had to fight for every game and won the first game 25-23, lost 18-25, then never looked back with games of 25-23 and 25-21. In a match that could decide second place, Kennesaw State will play East Tennessee Friday at home as they look to keep their streak alive.
