Thursday Roundup: Basketball semis are HOT, Chelios to debut

Chris Chelios is back in the show. The Atlanta Thrashers recalled their recently signed 48-year-old defenseman from Chicago of the AHL, and Chelios will make his season debut with the team tonight against Columbus. Chelios is an 11-time all-star and has several Stanley Cup titles on his resume from his time with the Red Wings.

Berkmar High School’s football team will have a new face on the sidelines next season as yesterday head coach John Thompson resigned , saying he wanted to return to school and seek a master’s degree. Thompson led the Patriots for two seasons, going 3-7 in his first season and 1-9 last year. Thompson has not ruled out completely coaching, telling the Gwinnett Daily Post that he might be open to a role as an assistant. The Berkmar opening means six Gwinnett schools will have a new coach on the sidelines next season. Collins Hill, Lanier, Central Gwinnett, GAC and Duluth all have hired a new coach this offseason.

The Wesleyan Wolves have a shot at a pair of Class A basketball titles this weekend as both the girls and boys teams won their respective semi-final games in Macon last night. The girls outlasted Taylor County 66-44 in a surprisingly closer-than-expected final tally. Holli Wilkins had a team-high 15 points in the win as Wesleyan will try for its third straight title when it faces Savannah Christian this Saturday in Macon. The boys meanwhile took out Nick Marshall, Lonnie Outlaw and the rest of Wilcox County 71-51 in a nightcap last night at Macon. Griffin Schamp scored 23 to pace the W olves, who will now face Whitefield Academy, winners over Terrell County. The action was hot last night at the Arena at the Gwinnett Center as NW Whitfield and Southwest DeKalb advanced to the girls Class AAAA finals with wins over Dutchtown and Forest Park. For the Class AAAA boys, Miller Grove survived an upset bid from Richmond Academy in a 61-60 win to advance to the title game, and the Wolverines will face Mays, winners over Bainbridge.

Former Olympic sprinter Marion Jones has taken up a new sport after her old one decided not to let her back. Jones signed with the WNBA’s Tulsa Shock on a one-year deal after working out for the Shock’s GM last week. Jones won five Olympic medals in the 2000 games but had them stripped in 2007 after admitting to steroid use.

Finally, no one ever said Tim Tebow was smart. The former Florida quarterback got his Wonderlic test results back and Tebow scored a 22 out of 50 , well below the other top quarterbacks of the 2010 draft class. Sam Bradford scored a 36 and both Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy scored higher than Tebow as well. Last season Matthew Stafford scored a 38 and Alex Smith several years back scored a 40.
