Tuesday Roundup: Meeks leaving UK, Falcons add depth, and Georgia lands top recruits

A few days after one former Norcross Blue Devil decided to stay in college, another announced he will stay in the NBA draft. Kentucky’s Jodie Meeks announced yesterday that he will remain in the NBA draft and leave Lexington after leading the SEC in scoring last season at 23.7 ppg. Meeks met with new UK coach John Calipari before making his decision shortly before yesterday’s 5 p.m. deadline for underclassmen to decide “in or out.” The Wildcats will welcome back big man Patrick Patterson, who also initially declared only to return to school. Meeks has been projected as a likely second round selection. Meeks played for the Norcross Blue Devils and led the team to a state title in 2006.

ADDING DEPTH…

The Atlanta Falcons added depth to its offensive line by signing two-time Pro Bowler Jeremy Newberry, a twelve year veteran. Newberry was drafted by the San Francisco in 1998 and played for the 49ers for nine seasons. He has also played in the AFC West for both Oakland and San Diego. Newberry has experience at both center as well as right tackle and guard.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE…

Da’Rick Rogers may have opened the floodgates for the University of Georgia when he pledged that he would sign with the Bulldogs next season. Rogers is considered by some to be the state’s top prospect and is the No. 4 receiver in the nation No. 22-ranked player overall, according to Rivals.com. Yesterday Rivals.com’s No.40 overall player, Brent Benedict of the Bolles School, committed to UGA. Benedict is an offensive tackle prospect and picked Georgia over Florida, USC, Ohio State and Notre Dame. Not to be outdone by the Florida product, Alpharetta receiver Michael Bennett also pledged his commitment to the University of Georgia, this coming on Wednesday morning. Bennet, a 6-2, 186-pound wideout, earned his Georgia offer no more than a week ago and, despite receiving interest from Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Syracuse among others, immediately jumped at the chance to be a Bulldog. Bennett is a three-star recruit according to Rivals.com.
