Wednesday Roundup: Dawgs get win on hardwood, Owls fall to ND

The University of Georgia mens basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak last night with a home win over UNC-Asheville 79-58.Ricky McPhee netted twenty points in the win while Travis Leslie tossed in 17 pointswith Trey Thompkins tallying 16 for the Hoop Dawgs. Georgia jumped out to a lead thanks to 14 UNC-A first half turnovers which the Dawgs converted into 19 points. McPhee was 8-9 from the field and 4-5 from three point range. Meanwhile PETA or the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has sent the University of Georgia a letter, asking the school to stop using a live Bulldog as its mascot. The group said that using a live animal perpetuates dog health problems, like heart attacks which is what is believed to have killed Uga VII. The group suggests using an inflatable mascot or a person in costume or even a robot dog. The group has reported petitioned the university before, begging the school to use a neutered dog from a shelter.

The Atlanta Falcons could soon have a new kicker and the new booter could have Collins Hill ties. The team watched four kickers Tuesday in a tryout at the team’s practice facility in the hopes of possibly finding some one better than the slumping Jason Elam. Steve Hauschka, Sam Swant, Shane Andrus and former Georgia Bulldog and Collins Hill Eagle Brandon Coutu all kicked for Falcons officials though none were signed. Elam is 10-16 this season, his second with the team.

Finally, the Kennesaw State Owls got a rude welcome to the Chicago Invitational Challenge Tuesday as Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody scored 29 points while collecting 15 rebounds in the Irish’s 80-62 win. Kurtis Woods had 18 points for the Owls while Carleton Scott chipped in 11 rebounds in the loss. The Owls dropped to 2-2 on the season.
