WWE’s Starrcade makes its return to Atlanta

When WWE’s Starrcade makes its long-awaited return to Atlanta after a 27-year absence, you can expect nothing but the best action the WWE has to offer in a city whose fans are arguably more involved than any other city in the world.

“It’s obviously an event that has a lot of history,” WWE Superstar Kevin Owens said. “Now, we have the modern crop of Superstars, it’s going to be pretty cool because we are going to have RAW and Smackdown guys there for it, that’s how big of a show it is.”

Starrcade, which will take over the Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth on Dec. 1 at 7 p.m., features matchups between the titans of the industry but one appearance — and its significance — was quickly noted by Owens.

“Rick Flair, that’s a pretty special appearance,” Owens said. “He isn’t at every show we do, but he is coming out for that. A.J. Styles, the Fiend, Roman Reign, all the biggest names are going to be there, and everyone is going to make sure to live up the caliber of the event that goes along with the name Starrcade.”

Opening the night will be the Universal Championship match between Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman in a Steel Cage Match. Following that, Roman Reigns will take on Baron Corbin and then Seth Rollins will face Erick Rowan. The next match pits The Kabuki Warriors vs. Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch vs. Bayley and Sasha Banks vs. Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross in a Fatal 4-Way Match for the Women’s Tag Team Championship. Next up is the Intercontinental Championship Match between Shinsuke Nakmaura and Sami Zayn vs. The Miz in a Handicap Match.

Then, Owens will take on Gainesville native A.J. Styles in a match that should produce fireworks.

“Well, he’s got the homefield advantage,” Owens said. “But I like to think I have the wrestling advantage. But I guess we will see about that when we get down to Starrcade. But it doesn’t matter who I get in the ring with, the memories I have wrestling in that are always positive and I’ll try to add another positive memory this time at Starrcade.”

The next match pits The New Day against the Revival for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship before Rusev faces Bobby Lashley to close out the night in a Last-Man Standing Match.

Those in attendance at Starrcade can expect a top-notch event, not only because of the bill, but because of the energy from the fans in Atlanta and how that translates into an electric environment in the arena – for the crowd and the Superstars.

“The main difference in Atlanta is how the fans react to everything,” Owens said. “A lot of how the fans react, and how into the show they get, the fact that there’s a rich wrestling history in that area helps. I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot in my heart for the Atlanta area and it even spreads out to the rest of Georgia. Everywhere I go in Georgia, I feel like I am very well-received. I have fond memories of wrestling, whether it’s in Macon or Atlanta — the biggest cities or the smaller markets – it’s always very good and a lot of fun, because the crowd is so excited.”
