BULLDOG BEAT: Defense earns first shutout of Grantham era

For much of the first five games of the season, Georgia couldn’t seem to do much right. But today, for the second game in a row, the Bulldogs (3-4, 2-3) hit on all cylinders in a 43-0 rout of Vanderbilt.

“I told the team after the game,” said head coach Mark Richt, “it doesn’t matter what level of football you are, a shutout is hard to get – ever. That’s just a great job by everybody on the defensive team. And when the offense doesn’t turn it over and put the defense in a bad way that helps too. Everybody had a hand in that.”

Running back Carlton Thomas scored the first two touchdowns of his career today, as the Bulldog offense had little trouble moving the ball and scoring on the hapless Commodores. Georgia’s offense racked up 547 yards of offense, 315 passing and 232 rushing. Quarterback Aaron Murray was 15 of 24 for 287 yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the defense held Vandy to 140 total yards, including just 58 on the ground.

This was the second dominant performance in a row by the Bulldogs, who defeated Tennessee 41-14 last week. The team seems to have responded well to more physical practices which were introduced prior to last week’s game.

“We’ve practiced more physically, and the guys responded to that,” said Richt. “Early on, we were not finishing like we should. The last couple of games we’ve started well and grabbed some momentum.”

It was the first shutout of the season for Georgia and its first against an SEC team at home since 1997 when the Dawgs shut out Miss St. 47-0.

The Bulldogs are now 70-17-2 on Homecoming and 19-3 against Vandy on Homecoming.
