Cherokee/Forsyth Beat, April 23-29: Lambert boys and girls win region tennis titles; West Forsyth sees win streak end

The West Forsyth baseball team’s five-game winning streak was snapped on Friday after losing to the high-powered, No. 2-ranked Gainesville Red Elephants, 4-2. A win would have capped off a successful week, as the Wolverines had already beaten Flowery Branch, Darlington, and Pickens. The game featured two outstanding pitchers in Blake Burkett for West and Hunter Anglin for Gainesville. Burkett pitched 5 1/3 innings only surrendering three earned runs while striking out five batters. Holding Gainesville to four runs total was an accomplishment in itself, as it was the second-lowest output that any team has recorded against them this season.
Twice, Class 4A Habersham Central held the Red Elephants to three runs. Much of West’s inability to score runs can be attributed to the outstanding pitching of Anglin who recorded a complete game, striking out five, and improving his record to 8-0 on the year. The Wolverines are in the midst of a five-game stretch, all against region opponents as the regular season enters its final stages. Tonight, West will host East Hall, a team they have already beaten 19-4 earlier this season. In fact, West has won four of the last five games against East dating back to 2008.

TENNIS SQUADS COMPLETE SWEEP …
The Lambert boys and girls tennis teams made a major breakthrough last week each winning the Region 7, Class 3A championship. The two region championships were the first of any kind for the new school, and with them comes a No. 1 seed in the state tournament. The boys cruised to the championship beating each team, 3-0. The most impressive win came in the semifinal round, when they blanked rival West Forsyth. Three singles wins from Jake Bouchillion, Kevin Duffey and Chase Wakefield were all they needed as they beat West Hall in the region final.
Like the boys, it was equally impressive as the girls swept West Forsyth in the finals. Singles player, Karlee Bryde, and the doubles teams of Taylor Lefton/Morgan Adams and Kate Trinkle/Lauren Ewers combined for the win. Along with a top seed, the team has also played its way to a No. 4 state ranking. West Forsyth qualified for the tournament, as well, and will be the No. 2 seed out of Region 7.
The West Forsyth girls lacrosse team achieved one of their goals on Monday night winning the region championship with a 15-11 win over Wesleyan. After going a perfect 6-0 leading up to the game, the Lady Wolverines knew with a win on Monday they would wrap up their first region championship in only three years of competition. It’s been a special season for the team as they have yet to be defeated and have their sights set on a competitive run in the state playoffs. Nikki Erdely, Taylor Hagin, Haley Holder, and Emilee Zabetakis have all turned in fine seasons for West Forsyth thus far. Erdely, in particular, has been outstanding leading the team with 46 points. Hagin leads the team in points with 65.
EAGLES FLY HIGH …
Winners of three straight, the Etowah boys baseball team is in the middle of a nine game run all against region opponents. It was a perfect week for the team as they beat McEachern, Woodstock, and Marietta by a combined score of 39-6. The offense has been really clicking for the Eagles as of late. In the win over Marietta, the team scored 10 runs in the third inning alone, with Danny Schmitt doing a large part of the damage hitting a grand slam. Etowah will be in action today as they travel to Cherokee to take on the Warriors, who lost 3-2 to the Eagles on March 26.
The Etowah boys tennis team found themselves in familiar territory last week wrapping up the regular season as region champ in their respective division for the fifth straight year. It was a seemingly easy path to the finals as the Eagles beat East Paulding and Kennesaw Mountain 3-0 in the first two rounds.
However, the final match was a different story, as the team needed all five contests to beat North Cobb, 3-2. After Jake Walsh and Will Coons won the No. 1 doubles match over North Cobb’s Kemeshin Naidoo and Jaryd Reese, the two teams were tied making the No. 2 singles match the deciding factor in the competition. Finishing off another solid season, Vincent Delisle beat North’s Aaron Baker in three sets to secure the championship for Etowah. The Eagles are now poised for another deep run on the state level.
