Week zero is a new term for us here at Score, but that is apparently what we are calling this weekend in the world of Georgia high school football. The main event was the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic, in which 14 of the state’s top programs took part.

Colquitt County, which blasted Mill Creek 31-14, is the new No. 1 in Class AAAAAA after Archer and McEachern both fell in the Classic. North Gwinnett moved up to No. 2 after edging McEachern in one of the most exciting games in recent memory. Joining the rankings this week in the state’s largest classification were Norcross and Valdosta. Norcross won a similarly exciting game over previously-ranked Tucker 32-29 while Valdosta dominated Brookwood 31-0.

Glynn Academy made its first appearance in the Class AAAAA rankings this season after beating Wayne County 40-20 in coach Rocky Hidalgo’s first game at the Brunswick school.

Class AAAA saw Burke County climb into the top five after a shutout of Statesboro. Woodward Academy debuted in the top 10 after replacing Arabia Mountain.

Class AAA saw no significant changes while Class AA saw several alterations. Defending state champ is back at No. 1 after Benedictine lost 24-21 to GAC. The Spartans rose to No. 2 behind their region rivals while Benedictine comes in at No. 3. Vidalia and Seminole County founds spots in this weeks’ rankings while Lamar County dropped to No. 10 after tying Howard.

The Battleground Classic in Columbus featured some top Class A-private teams, including Brookstone (the event host), ELCA, Mount Paran and Mount Pisgah. Brookstone made huge leap in the Class A-Private rankings, as the Cougars upset Mount Pisgah 42-34 and debuted in the 2014 rankings at No. 6. Mount Paran had a resounding 31-14 win over perennial-power ELCA and improved to No. 2.
