Dawgs practice in pads

On the fifth day of fall camp, Mark Richt gave the Dawgs a padded practice.

Georgia donned pads for the first time on Monday and the spotlight was on offensive tackle Watts Dantzler who spent the day working at guard with the first-team offensive line. Freshman John Theus worked at Dantzler’s right tackle spot.

“If it helps out the team, I’ll play guard” said Watts. “Playing both positions helps me out as a lineman.”

The team also conducted a 3-on-3 drill, in which the offense won 5-4. Richard Samuel was the deciding factor in the drill with a strong run resulting in a touchdown to end the drill. Samuel garnered attention over the weekend after stating he would rather play fullback because he likes to hit but is still receiving reps at both fullback and tailback.

“We talked about it, and I told him we need him to be ready to play at either spot,” Richt said in his post-practice report. “Getting reps at tailback will not keep him from starting at fullback.

Injury report: Offensive guard Chris Burnette missed practice again due to an illness. The team expects him to return to practice tomorrow. Ray Drew missed practice due to a concussion and Abry Jones also missed practice due to a left knee contusion.

Richt on redshirt freshman Xzavier Ward: “He’s getting more reps than we thought. We like him. He has a lot of ability.

Chris Conley on improvements from last season: “I’m a lot more comfortable. The game slowed down for me and I’m able to make more plays.”

Justin Scott-Wesley on learning the playbook: “During the spring some guys went down and I picked up valuable reps. I’m out there doing my thing, playing smooth, playing fast, playing focused.”
