Denmark football quarantined after player’s positive COVID-19 test

The Denmark Danes have been sidelined as of Thursday due to a positive COVID-19 test within the program.

Denmark athletic director Jamie Corr reported the positive test to Forsyth County AD Nathan Turner and the Danes entered the two-week quarantine. If no other symptoms or positive tests occur, the Denmark can return to the field July 27.

Corr then reported the test to Dave Hunter of the Corky Kell Classic.

“In terms of the football season, this put them behind the eight ball and makes it extremely difficult for their preparation.”, Hunter said. “It puts the coach and the players in a very stressful situation, but it is in the best interest of the players to quarantine.”

The Danes are currently slated to open their season against Tucker at Dacula High School in the Corky Kell Kickoff Classic on August 20 at 5:30 p.m. Assuming Denmark does not experience any more COVID-19 setbacks, it will be able to return on July 27th and will have a little over three weeks to prepare for the Corky Kell Classic.

“Obviously, we are concerned about all of our teams,” Hunter said. “This will be a concern and we will follow it. We do not want to endanger their players and we certainly don’t want to do that to any other programs.”

Forsyth County policy states that neither coach Mike Palmieri nor Corr can comment on the issue in detail.

‘’The only thing I can tell you is that Denmark football has had a player test positive and is scheduled to return to practice July 27,” Corr said.

Turner, the County AD, and spokeswoman Jennifer Caracciolo could not be reached for comment.

On Thursday, Score Atlanta reported the Milton head coach Adam Clack tested positive over the GHSA’s ‘Dead Week’, however the program was not required to quarantine by Fulton County due to the social distancing and proper precautions that were in place. With Denmark, a player testing positive required the quarantine.

Denmark, who is moving this season to Class AAAAAAA, finished with a 7-3 record last year in Class AAAAA and a loss to Sandy Creek in the first round of the playoffs.
