Drama building throughout baseball playoffs

There were four deciding Game 3′s left to settle on Friday including two in Class AAAAAA. Roswell visited No. 8 Mill Creek for a rubber match after taking Game 1 7-6 and getting routed 8-0 in Game 2. The Hornets were out-hit 12-11 by Mill Creek, but got the 11-6 victory due to the nine runners the Hawks stranded. Connor Johnstone was credited with the win and struck out four. Roswell will get Lowndes in the quarterfinals.

After knocking off top-ranked McEachern in the first round, Tift County advanced to the Elite 8 with a 13-5 win over Newnan in Game 3. The Blue Devils pounded 14 hits, including three homers and never trailed. Sophomore Briggs Benson hit two deep balls, including a two-out grand slam in the fourth inning to pace Tift County to victory. The Blue Devils will be paired with Walton in the Elite 8.

In Class AAAAA, Pope was tied 5-5 with No. 7 Winder-Barrow in the eight inning when Stephen Struck took a fastball from Winder-Barrow reliever Travis Demeritte into the gap in left center. Nathaniel Lowe scored all the way from first base and beat the throw with a head first slide. Pope will host Evans in the quarterfinals.

In Class A-Public No. 5 Lincoln County fell 6-5 to Treutlen. The Red Devils got off to a hot start by scoring three runs in the top of the first, but Treutlen answered with a pair of runs to minimize the damage and go on to take the series. Treutlen’s starting pitcher, Matthew Powell, got on track after the first inning and allowed just two runs in the next six. The Vikings would score a pair of runs in the third inning, and then again in the bottom of the sixth to steal the lead. Treutlen will visit Gordon Lee in the semifinals.
