ELITE JUNIOR: Michael Matthews

When St. Pius X needs a field goal in a close game, there’s no better player to turn to than Michael Matthews. The humble junior has had an outstanding high school career and has continued his success through his junior year. So far, Michael has punted four punts more than 50 yards. Michael has also never missed a field goal in high school.

Special teams play can swing the game in a team’s favor, especially in the college ranks. Having a poor special teams unit can be the difference between playing in a bowl game and missing the offseason. Schools are beginning to take notice of Michael’s play and will soon be eager for him to join their squad. Ideally, Michael hopes to attend Wake Forest, Navy or Army. Michael has been working hard thus far to make himself a vital asset to any team, including going to UGA, Georgia State and Duke camps along with the Chris Sailer Underclassman Event.

In addition to his great on field performances, Michael is an outstanding student who has 3.75 GPA and has been on the honor roll each semester so far. He also tries to stay involved in the St. Pius X community, actively participating with his youth group. Michael also helps out with the Emmaus House during the summer. The Emmaus house was established as a camp for the underprivileged kids at Michael’s church.

Michael works hard at every aspect of his life and is doing very well in all facets of his life. Whether on the football field kicking for St. Pius X, making honor roll at the end of each semester, or helping people in his community who truly need it, Michael does everything he can to make his life and the lives of those around him better.

EDIT: Michael called me to clarify he has three PUNTS of over 50 yards, not field goals. He recently punted his fourth over 50 yards.
