FELTON FIRED: Georgia basketball coach dismissed after six seasons

After watching the Bulldog basketball team start the 2008-09 season with a dismal 9-11 record (0-5 in SEC play), University of Georgia athletic director Damon Evans had seen enough, firing men’s head basketball coach Dennis Felton on Thursday morning, the day after his team suffered a crushing 83-57 loss to Florida.

Felton started with the Bulldog basketball program in 2003 and had an 84-91 overall record there in his six seasons, including a 26-59 mark against the SEC. The Bulldogs surprised many last season by winning the SEC Tournament as its lowest seeded team, but Georgia’s current seven-game losing streak apparently served as the final straw.

Associate coach Pete Herrmann will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Virginia Commonwealth head coach Anthony Grant’s name has surfaced as a possible replacement.
