Football clinches region, breaks school single-season wins record

The football team defeated previously unbeaten Athens Academy on Friday Oct. 24 to win Region 8-A. The Wolves held a Spartans offense that had averaged 37 points a game to only seven. The Wolves defense created three turnovers, all in the second half. Senior defensive back and receiver Lee Ellis starred on both sides of the ball. Ellis had an interception late in the third quarter, a diving 19-yard touchdown reception in the back of the end zone early in the fourth, and a fumble recovery with 6:15 left in the game. The Wolves finished the regular season last Friday with a 49-6 win over Athens Christian. The team has this Friday off before beginning the playoffs as a No. 1 seed. … The volleyball team defeated Jefferson and St. Vincent’s in the first and second rounds of the Class 2A/A state tournament before losing to No. 1-ranked Westminster in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Oct. 25. Anne Marie Armstrong finished with 62 kills in the tournament. … Last Thursday, the boys and girls cross country teams won the Region 7-A titles. Selected member from both teams will compete in the state meet this Saturday in Carrollton.
