Georgia teams take national stage in Hoover

Craig Sager II

In Hoover, Ala. six Georgia High Schools round up a field of 32 teams aiming for the National Select 7-on-7 Championship today. Lassiter, North Cobb, Alpharetta, North Gwinnett, Valdosta and Jefferson County all earned their spots in the final four pools of eight teams through their successful summers in the tournaments travelling qualifiers. Thursday marked pool play, and the teams hit the field to play for seeding in today’s tournament.

Jefferson County earned the No. 17 spot and will face Lexington Catholic out of Kentucky in the opening round of today’s double elimination bracket. North Gwinnett will face Spain Park, Ala. as the No. 9 seeded team. Jefferson County and North Gwinnett are the only two Georgia teams on the left side of the bracket and would meet in the third round if they each win the first two games.

Unfortunately for Valdosta and Alpharetta, one of them will get sent to the loser’s bracket after the first round. No. 18 Alpharetta plays No. 15 Valdosta. The winner of that game will likely get a matchup with No. 2 North Cobb in the second round. North Cobb cruised through pool play on Thursday and will be aiming to stay in the winners bracket.

Lassiter faces Fulton, TN as the tenth seeded team and will play the winner of Foley Ala. vs. Montini Catholic, Ill. if they can advance. The tournament begins at 9AM on Friday and the championship will start at 4:00PM. Playon! Sports will broadcast every game live from Hoover

North Cobb and North Gwinnett reached the semifinals in the losers’ bracket, but were eliminated within minutes of each other. Full tournament recap will be posted Monday.
