GHSA State Softball Tournament updates from Friday

The action at the GHSA State Fast Pitch Softball Championships in Columbus on Friday set up a stellar championship Saturday, and, for the first time since 2016, East Coweta will not be the champions in the state’s highest classification after losing to Peachtree Ridge 8-2 in the Class AAAAAAA losers bracket.

Mountain View is one game away from its first-ever state championship after beating Grayson 2-1 in the Class AAAAAAA winner’s bracket semifinals. The Bears await the winners of the remaining teams in the loser’s bracket. Peachtree Ridge and Etowah will play at 10 a.m. on Saturday for a berth in the final game of the loser’s bracket.

Pope is trying for its second-ever state championship after an 11-0 victory over Dacula in the Class AAAAAA winner’s bracket semifinals. Dacula awaits the winner of the Lee County/Northgate game in the loser’s bracket.

In Class AAAAA, Locust Grove is unbeaten and one game away from its third-straight state championship after it beat Walnut Grove 8-0 and Jones County 4-0 to earn the finals berth. Jones County awaits the winner of Harris County and Buford in the loser’s bracket.

Franklin County is the unbeaten survivor in the Class AAA winner’s bracket after dropping Lovett 5-2 in the semis. Lovett awaits a matchup between Calhoun and Ringgold.

Heritage-Catoosa advanced past Madison County 4-1 and Oconee County 5-2 in the Class AAAA winner’s bracket and is one win away from defending its 2018 state championship. Oconee County awaits the winner of Marist and Northside-Columbus in the loser’s bracket.

On the hunt for its first-ever title, Banks County beat Rockmart 8-0 in the winner’s bracket of the Class AA tournament to earn a championship berth. Rockmart now awaits the winner of the Bremen/Lamar County game in the loser’s bracket.

Gordon Lee is now one win away from its fifth-straight state championship after victories over Bowdon 12-0 and Commerce 8-0 in the Class A-Public winner’s bracket. Commerce awaits the winner of Trion and Bowdon in the loser’s bracket.

In Class A-Private, Mount de Sales is one win away from its first-ever state championship at a 2-1 victory over George Walton in the winner’s bracket semifinals. It awaits the winners of the losers bracket games.
