GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Championships: Day 3

The third day of the GHSA Traditional State Wrestling Championships set up a competitive finals Saturday. Let’s take a look at what took place on Friday.

In the girls tournament, Hiram’s KJ Haney defeated Southeast Whitfield’s Teonna Bonds in the 225-pound bracket to earn a finals match against Veterans wrestler Markayla Stewart. Stewart earned her title berth by defeating Northgate wrestler Mia Fisher 6-0 in the semifinals. In the 175-pound bracket, Hiram’s Stacey Pgouda defeated West Forsyth’s Hailey Patrick to set up a finals match against Alexander’s Dream Santiago. Santiago defeated Veterans wrestler Emilie Rohme in the semifinals. Hiram’s Heaven Byrd defeated Northgate’s Madeline Mans in the 166-pound semifinals to advance to the finals against Cartersville’s Paige Nelson. Nelson beat Newton County’s India Page in the semifinals to earn her finals berth. In the 156-pound bracket, Collins Hill’s Tiyahna Askew beat New Manchester wrestler Kayla Mack to earn a finals berth. On the other side of the bracket awaits White County’s Sidney Sullens, who earned her title berth with a victory over Alexander wrestler Trezha Boatwright. In the 146-pound bracket, Stephenson wrestler Kiomy Morris defeated Jordan’s T’Keya Hill. Morris will face North Forsyth’s Sophia Eglian in the finals. Eglian beat Carrollton’s Alejandrin Griggs to earn her finals berth. Camden County’s Alexa Downs defeated New Manchester wrestler Shyra LaGarde in the 136-pound bracket to earn a finals berth against Daisy Gilleylen from Stone Mountain. Gilleylen beat Armuchee’s Jamison Powell to earn her titles berth. In the 126-pound bracket, Hiram wrestler Mia Kurashima beat Franklin County’s Keren Garcia to earn a finals berth against Duluth’s Aki Choates. Choates beat Jordan wrestler Laquitta Smith to advance. In the 116-pound bracket, Ola’s Amani Jones beat Alexander wrestler Trinity Moon to advance to the finals. Jones will face Kennedy Shropshire in the finals after Shropshire defeated Baldwin’s Catherine Mullis in the semifinals. North Gwinnett’s Dianna Holmes beat Temple’s Zoe East to advance to the finals of the 106-pound bracket. In the other semifinal, Athena Malek beat Stephens County’s Savannah Lackey to earn the finals berth. In the 95-pound bracket, Hiram’s Alana Washington beat Cartersville’s Elora Waterman to advance to the finals against Candalaria Velasquez from Gilmer. Velasquez beat Pike County’s Jessica Bell in the semifinals to earn the berth.

For the boys, Camden County is leading the team competition in Class AAAAAAA with 198.5 points. Collins Hill is second with 127.5 points. Mountain View is third with 117 points. Brookwood is fourth with 101 points and Rockdale County is fifth with 84 points.

Valdosta is leading Class AAAAAAA with 152 points ahead of Pope (128.5 points), Richmond Hill (119 points), Alexander (115.5 points) and Creekview (102.5 points).

Woodland-Cartersville (173.5 points) is leading Class AAAAA ahead of Buford (165 points), Veterans (113 points), Ola (109.5 points) and Union Grove (85 points).

Woodward Academy (144 points) is holding a slim lead over West Laurens (140.5 points) at the top of Class AAAA. Blessed Trinity is third with 113 points. Gilmer (93.5 points) and Ridgeland (84.5 points) are fourth and fifth.

Sonoraville has a lead over Jefferson in the team points with 160 ahead of the Dragons 151.5 points. North Hall is third with 149.5 points. Jackson County (91 points) and Lumpkin County (77 points) are fourth and fifth.

Social Circle is leading Class AA with 129.5 points. Elbert County (118.5 points), Chattooga (97 points), Toombs County (95.5 points) and Pepperell (72 points) are chasing.

In Class A, Commerce has a commanding lead with 179 points ahead of Darlington (134 points), Turner County (90 points), Trion (80 points) and George Walton Academy (78.5 points).
