Basketball action continued Saturday and in the 60th Annual Lanierland Tournament presented by Jackson EMC, the schedule for the championship on Monday at Cherokee Bluff is set.
On the boys side of the bracket, West Hall will play Gainesville for the Lanierland title at 7:30 p.m. and for the girls, Lakeview Academy will play North Hall for the championship at 6 p.m.
In the semis, the North Hall girls defeated Cherokee Bluff 58-32 to advance. Lakeview Academy earned its berth in the championship after beating Flowery Branch 52-47. For the boys, Gainesville beat Cherokee Bluff 68-48 and will play in its fourth-straight final and West Hall defeated Johnson-Gainesville 62-26 to earn its first championship berth since 2009.
Here’s what went down in other events across the state.
Lake City Classic at Allatoona: Host Allatoona and Tennessee program Evangelical Christian will play for the championship on Monday after Saturday’s semis. In the first game of the day, Duluth defeated Alpharetta 51-33 and Trent Gordon led with 12 points for the Wildcats. In Game 2, Alcoa defeated Booker T. Washington 65-62 behind an 18-point effort from TJ Martin. In Game 3, Evangelical Christian defeated Kennesaw Mountain 61-57 to advance to the championship game. Allatoona earned its championship berth with a 47-42 victory over Walton.
Big South Shootout at Holy Innocents: The North Gwinnett Bulldogs defeated Lovejoy 64-52 following stellar performances from junior Kobe Jackson and senior J.R. Martin who both finished with 17 points. The Americus-Sumter Panthers defeated out-of-state opponent Landstown 64-61. Senior Wallace Bradley led with 15 points and Quevoluia Willoughby scored 14. In the fourth game, Lithia Springs topped Northeast Macon 73-65 and Anthony Hardy led the Lions to victory with 24 points. The North Clayton Eagles fought a close game against Parkview and won 66-62. Senior Jermaine Lattimore finished with 33 points. The Carrollton Trojans outlasted Wesleyan 60-58. Senior Marcellious Lockett finished with 20 points.
For the girls, the Forest Park Panthers beat Beach 49-34 following a strong second-half performance. Junior Sania Feagin led the team with 15 points and 11 rebounds while reaching a milestone 1,000 points in her career. Junior Jasmine Stevens scored 10 points. The Wesleyan Wolves outscored Carrollton 21-9 in the first quarter and maintained the lead throughout the remainder of the game to secure the victory. Senior Avyonce Carter was electric for Wesleyan, scoring from everywhere on the court and finishing with 28 points.
Chuck Miller Classic at McDonough: On the boys side, the hosts brought home the title as McDonough won 71-59 over Stockbridge. Jay Greene led with 21 points and six assists. Daeyon James scored 15 points with nine rebounds. Jadon Sanders scored 11 points with 12 assists and Jeqhuan Carter scored 11 points with nine rebounds. For the girls, Arabia Mountain defeated McDonough 68-45 to win the championship.
Deep South Classic at Brookwood: The finals are set for the 28th Annual Deep South Classic when the Collins Hill girls face Madison County at 6 p.m. on Monday, followed by the Mill Creek boys playing North Carolina school Providence Day at 7:30 p.m.
Round Ball Classic at Josey (Augusta): The Hephzibah Rebels capped off their weekend of basketball with a win over Johnson-Savannah to claim the Round Ball Classic championship after leading by just three points at the half. For the girls, the Cross Creek Razorbacks defeated Josey 43-35 to claim the championship. Junior Jordyn Dorsey led the team with 13 points while senior Micah Bess scored 12.
Battle of the States at Towns: On the boys side of the tournament, hosting Towns defeated Union County 67-61 to earn the championship victory. For the girls, Union County defeated Polk County 66-41 to win the title. Corinne Hill and Ava Hunter each finished with 15 points and Brooke Dockery scored 10 points for Union County.
