The Class AAAAAA boys lacrosse playoffs have seen a surprising amount of upsets, but while the results might appear shocking on paper, this is not a new trend for the competitive and gritty Area 2. Last year, Area 2 placed three teams in the final four (Roswell, Milton and Walton) and after Pope, Roswell and Etowah survived the quarterfinals on Saturday, three spots are occupied in the semifinals once again.

Defending champion and No. 1 seed Roswell handled Mill Creek 16-9, but the other three quarterfinals matchups were down-to-the-wire. Area 1’s Harrison held on for a thrilling 18-17 overtime win over Centennial and Pope and Etowah represented Area 2 with huge road victories. Pope followed its 7-6 overtime win over Lambert in the first round by knocking off North Gwinnett on Saturday 11-8 and four seed Etowah suffocated Kennesaw Mountain in an 8-7 victory.

Pope visits Harrison on Wednesday and this will be a rematch of April 24 when the Hoyas edged Pope 16-14 on the road. Roswell and Etowah faced back on March 6 and Roswell ran away with a 12-6 home victory but since the loss, the Eagles have held 10 of 14 opponents to single digits and on the season they boast a defense that has held 10 different opponents to five goals or less.

In Class A-AAAAA, Lovett and Allatoona cruised through the quarterfinals and will face for the first time this season during Tuesday’s semifinals at Lovett. Westminster and Cambridge also advanced to the semifinals this past Friday and will meet for the first time this season Tuesday at Cambridge. The top-seeded Wildcats dominated Benedictine 13-1 on Friday and after an 18-0 shutout over Blessed Trinity to open the postseason have now outscored their two opponents 31-1 entering the semis. Cambridge topped Kell 17-6 in the first round and held off Starr’s Mill 10-4 in the quarterfinals. That gives Cambridge just 10 goals allowed through the first two rounds, the second fewest in both classifications behind only Westminster.
